Madeira, flower paradise in the middle of the Atlantic

Madeira is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Europe. The archipelago is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and belongs to Portugal. Its biggest island Madeira offers peaceful and refreshing atmosphere and gorgeous landscapes

Impatient and with high expectations we also chose this exotic destination. We are eager to explore Madeira’s beautiful parks and gardens, cliffs, rural villages in quiet valleys, steep mountains and unique Flora and Fauna.

Our first stop is the capital Funchal. This cosmopolitan city is well known for its style and its essence.

Truly magnificent view over Funchal’s natural amphitheater and its bay.

The rocky beach forms the coast of this volcano island.

Once arrived in the city, we take a short walk along the promenade. Tourists and locals enjoy here the relaxing hours.

The island of Madeira is world famous with its natural beauty and is therefore often called The garden of the Atlantic. In addition to the natural landscapes there is a variety of splendid, well maintained gardens and parks.

Park Santa Catherina above the harbor reveals stunning views over Funchal and its hills.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is the highlight of our journey. This is one of the most beautiful tropical gardens in the world. Located 5 km from the city center the gardens are easily accessible by cable cars. The travel takes about 20 min and reviews incredible views of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean. Once arrived at the top of the hill we are eager to see more.

The garden occupies a huge area and is planted with exotic flora from different continents. The lush tropical vegetation in combination with two oriental gardens- Chinese and Japanese is impressive. Floating water, fountains, ceramic sculptures, paths decorated with Asian statues, provide visitors delightful views.

Here is also the biggest vase in the world. The terracotta panels along the paths depict scenes from the Portuguese history. Additionally, the museum exhibits collections of minerals and gems and contemporary sculptures from Zimbabwe.

At the end of the long day we visit the local restaurant to taste the world famous Madeira wine.

Definitely for us The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is the best place to enjoy a special day.

To complete our journey in Funchal, we go to the Botanical Garden. This colorful area above the Ocean, offers countless of extraordinary flowers, plants and trees. This is a favorite tourist destination which reveals a fantastic view over the city of Funchal.

Here we see for the first time typical Madeira plants from the Laurissilva Forest, which is classified as a UNESCO World Nature Heritage Site.

Funchal is also famous with its firework festivals, and the New Year firework show is the best in the world, according to the Guinness World Records. We visit the city during the Atlantic Festival International Fireworks Competition when every Saturday evening a new light show is presented, an impressive experience.

Definitely our first days in Madeira are a unique and magnificent.
