The Palaces of Augustusburg and Falkenlust-The German Rococo Experience
Brühl and the palaces
Augustusburg and Falkenlust are a marvelous destination in North
Rhine-Westphalia. Brühl is a small town between Cologne and Bonn. A regional
train from Cologne to Brühl is about 15 min.
The palace Augustusburg was built
by the Archbishop elector of Cologne, Clemence-August of Bavaria and was the
official residence of the Prince Bishops of Cologne. The beautiful complex is a
Unesco World Heritage site.
The richly decorated palace has also a fantastic
interior with so many details, rich tapestries and lavish art work. Very
spectacular is the staircase of Balthasar Neumann, a real highlight and
an amazing example of creativity and genius.
The beautiful palace is a
wonderful masterpiece of the Rococo fascinating architecture.
The baroque gardens were modeled on French designs.
Spectacular grounds to stroll in
a sunny day.
A nice place to relax under the
trees.
The area around the palace was used by
Clemence-August for hunting and falconry.
A nice walk through the forest and
countryside brings us to the Falkenlust Hunting Lodge where the court met after
hunting for dinner or entertainment.
Falkenlust, a small summer
residence and a hunting lodge.
The chapel with an astonishing
grotto covered by shells.
I like architecture, art and
history and I truly enjoyed Augustusburg and its charm, elegance and splendor.
