Natural Park Vratza Mountain

Natural Park Vratza Mountain is a really picturesque area situated in northwest Bulgaria close to the city of Vratza. This extremely beautiful mountain offers unique nature and unforgettable panoramic views, represented by the harmonically combination of endemic flora and fauna, karst, high rocks, rivers and caves.

One of the most famous caves in this area is Ledenika. Located just 16 km away from Vratza, Ledenika cave is unique in Bulgaria and reveals the beauty of Bulgarian nature at its best. In winter the cave is frozen and the ice columns and ice waterfalls create unique figures, which give the name to the cave.

These ice figures in combination with the rock formations stalactites and stalagmites make the cave particularly popular all over the world. The cave is 300 meters long and its gem is the concert hall where the first underground concert in Bulgaria was performed. The hall is fascinating with its perfect acoustic and decorations of rock formations. Vratza Mountain is just impressive with its high rocks and green areas.

The landscape is completed by the small river Leva, which during millions of years, has formed the landscape around. The route close to the river is one fascinating experience. Tourists here can, without doubt, enjoy the indescribable beauty of the region. Here in the narrowest part is the magnificent gorge Vratzata.

The sharp cliffs are 400 meters high just like reaching the sky. These are the highest cliffs in the Balkan Peninsula and offer perfect conditions for climbing and alpinism.

According to the legend the Romans has closed the gorge by a high iron door and defending in this way the local people. Probably this legend gave the name to the gorge, meaning a door in Bulgarian.
